In the picturesque maze of streets in Ortezzano’s historic center lies Casa Carboni, a building riched in history and significance. Also known as Palazzo Carboni, this structure – located along the street named after the famous Latinist – represents more than just a dwelling: it is a symbol of the village’s cultural memory.
Its fame is inextricably linked to Giuseppe Carboni (1856-1929), the distinguished scholar co-author of the renowned Latin dictionary, who was born here. Sources describe it as a modest dwelling spread over three floors, including a basement, formed by the union of several structural units, possibly dating back to the 18th century.
For years, Casa Carboni bore the marks of time and suffered significant damage from the 2016-2017 earthquake, eventually being closed due to safety concerns.
Today, however, Casa Carboni is at the center of a major restoration project. Donated to the Town of Ortezzano in the early 2000s, Casa Carboni has since received public funding for restoration and seismic upgrades. The goal is ambitious: to transform this symbolic venue into a study center or house museum – a living space dedicated not only to the figure of Giuseppe Carboni but also to Latin culture and the history of Ortezzano, thus returning it to the community and visitors.
