Between the countryside and the historic center, Ortezzano’s ancient springs tell stories of daily life, work and community. These places of water, once vital to the village and its districts, are now precious reminders of local memory and traditions.
Fonte Tre Cannelle
In the hamlet of Casali, nestled deep in the countryside and north of the old town, is the Fonte Tre Cannelle (lit. three spouts fountain) next to its wash house. As its name suggests, it has three practical water taps. Rebuilt in 1821, this fountain has been vital to Ortezzano’s daily life: until the 1950s, it supplied water to both the town and the district. A recent restoration has brought new life to the fountain and the washhouse.
Fonte da Bora
Very close to the historic center, along a path that runs north of the Carmine Church, stands the Fonte da Bora. It is thought to date back to the 17th century, a theory supported by the Papetti family coat of arms placed above the basin. It was used by the people of Ortezzano until 1970. After a period of neglect, the fountain was fortunately restored and made it usable once again.
Fonte de Marà
Moving into the countryside, in the locality of Varano, you come across another old spring with a washhouse: the Fonte de Marà. It was recently restored as well, and it is now in excellent condition, standing as a testament to rural life of the past.
