The “Porta da Sole” is the the only medieval gate of the Ortezzano castle preserved to date. Located on the eastern side of the city wall – hence the name “da Sole” (literally meaning “facing the sun”) due to its eastern exposure – this gate was one of the fortified entrances to the village.

The gate stands out for its Gothic style characterized by an elegant pointed arch topped by corbels. Above the entrance is a partially legible coat of arms, made of brick tiles, bearing the date 1780 on its lower portion. The coat of arms has been attributed to the Arpini, a noble family from Ortezzano.

The outer arch leads into a covered space with a barrel vault, which transitions into an Gothic ribbed vault as one proceeds further into the interior of the castle. The vault was once entirely frescoed, as revealed by the traces still visible on the south lunette.

The Porta da Sole was still equipped with a wooden door in 1808, although it was already in poor condition at the time. Today, the Porta da Sole is not only an important architectural feature but serves as a gateway to the historic heart of Ortezzano.
